This pictorial machine cancel celebrates the 100th birth anniversary of Carl Hagenbeck (1844 - 1913) which is odd, because it was used in 1948. Hagenbeck is the father of the "Hagenbeck Revolution", or modern zoo. He transformed the old concept of animals in cages with bars to animals in natural settings with moats.

bookbndrbob - The machine cancel is not actually celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Carl Hagenbeck. It appears to be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Hagenbeck Zoo, which traces its origin to 1848, when Carl's father, Gottfried Claes Carl Hagenbeck, a fishmonger, acquired 6 seals from his fishermen, and started exhibiting them. He acquired more animals, and eventually his son, Carl, turned the whole operation into a zoo.

I hope STALLZER won't mind if I post his KGVI scan in this thread.

This block is too beautiful not to be posted with all these elephants.
