Does SG assign any catalog numbers for the EME varities of Machins?

And, I noticed this thread is under "classic" and not under "modern" but it really should be under modern.

Hi angore,

My 2010 edition does not.

For example, for the photogravure 30p with elliptical perfs there is only one entry, SG Y1688 plus an imperf variety.

It does note the three printers that produced this stamp but doesn't list the stamps separately.

I believe the Walsall version is an EME design.

There is a general note on the introduction of computer-engraved cylinders and this refers the reader to Volume 4 of the GB Specialised catalogue.

I believe these issues have been renumbered in the latest edition and more information may have been added in recent years.

I am curious if these high values are difficult to find used.

Well, I don't know the higher values. But, here, you have the lowest of the set circulated to Barcelona (Catalonia) just 2 weeks ago.

15 face for six more Machins. I absolutely love this series, but it's becoming a nuisance!

I loathe them - should have been discontinued forty years ago - so I just use them as postage!

Most of the Scott Classic catalogue items aren't "classics" either - just middle-period stuff that's needed to make the catalogue commercially viable.

Machins looked fine when they appeared in the late-'60s. They've just gone on far too long, especially for a rather bland design, albeit one that tries to hark back to the 1d black.

Classic refers to design.

I don't believe Scott or Amos Publishing hold a copyright on the word, anyway.

The design was a revolution in its day. Notice there are no words - no lettering at all, just the effigy and denomination. That was new.

As for the effigy, I think it's beautifully done. It was painstakingly modelled in clay by Arnold Machin, then photographed in various lighting conditions, and reproduced in an array of colours.

For me, it is one of the all-time greats.

From "ruthrumbold.id.au" website:

A Classic Design or a Design Classic is a manufactured product that has timeless aesthetic appeal. Regardless in what year or time period it still remains at a high standard.
