From Googlenormous:

Most of the time, the wicket is one of the two sets of three stumps and two bails at either end of the pitch.[1] The wicket is guarded by a batsman who, with his bat, attempts to prevent the ball from hitting the wicket.

The origin of the word is from the standard definition of wicket as a small gate. Historically, cricket wickets had only two stumps and one bail and looked like a gate. The third (middle) stump was introduced in 1775.

The size and shape of the wicket has changed several times during the last 300 years and its dimensions and placing is now determined by Law 8 in the Laws of Cricket.

Time to forget the English,
and concentrate on spanking the Indians.... Hehehe

Can life be sweeter?
digesting a ginormous Christmas Dinner
watching the advertised to death TV on Mute
whilst listening to ABC Cricket commentary,
whilst stamping...

15.3 Umesh Yadav to Ponting, no run, Ponting is hit on the helmet. Good bowling
from Umesh Yadav. Banged it in short outside off, Ponting's first instinct was to pull
and he swivelled to do so. Didn't connect and the ball thudded into the side of the
helmet. The ball nearly seemed to be carrying onto the stumps, but a twitchy Ponting
kicks it away. He then walks nervously to Ed Cowan and has a word. The 'G' is
suddenly buzzing and Umesh Yadav has smelt blood. Ponting looks very vulnerable.

15.2 Umesh Yadav to Ponting, no run, full and swinging away from outside off,
Ponting shoulders arms

15.1 Umesh Yadav to Shaun Marsh, out Caught by Virat Kohli! Umesh is the man for
India. Two wickets in two overs. Full and outside off, Shaun Marsh got forward to
drive uppishly. He did so, but with an open face and the ball went low to point where
Chirkut took it easily. Shaun Marsh sliced that and immediately knew he was gone.
Celebrations from the Indian camp. Shaun Marsh c Virat Kohli b Umesh Yadav 0(6)

I'll be at the MCG tomorrow (Wednesday), from breakfast till stumps.

Australia Post has an online exhibition at the moment - a Summer of Cricket. I saw the real exhibition a few years ago, and it was excellent.

G'day to all you cricket loving stamp collectors. I just joined the forum and was surprised to see a cricket thread. Getting back into stamp collecting after many years away..... might make cricket one of my themes to collect.

Don't let my location fool you ...... I'm a die hard England fan ... from way back. Can't wait for England's next test series to start in January against Pakistan.

Well, we spanked the Indians,
thanks to a renewed and refreshing, dare I say super
bowling attack.
Mr. Cricket saved Australia for mine, with a dour batting performance
22 crows had a field day, she must have seen a bag of wickets fall
when she visited.

Attendence over the 4 days was 189,437 fans flocking to the MCG
well done Victorians.
The batting performance of the little Master, was a thrill for me.

Apparently, Portia Pig twittered in from a farm somewhere,
apparently they leave the ABC broadcast on in the shed
and the pig stays in all day listening to commentary.

Part of the Indian Cricket support team....

No AGST
the little master missed out,

make the impossible look easy.

Well, Tendulkar did make 105 runs, but it took him 2 innings to do so, so he'll have to wait until Sydney to see if he can nail that 100th century.
He didn't get to bat on Wednesday, but we were entertained with 15 wickets falling for the day.

Photoshop has a lot to answer for. The cartoon players in the 500 stamp are OK but the rest look ridiculous.

Tendulkar has come to Sydney and made 121 runs. Unfortunately for him, once again it took him 2 innings to do it. It's giving the journos and commentators something to rabbit on about.
