Quote: GB 1Pound U.P.U. Nice. The stamp manages to overcome a cancel that would have swamped a lesser stamp. |

This topic could use revitalizing... From 1952, engraved by Waterlow: This stamp is one of those catalogue oddities. SG values it when mint well above the stamps around it (£24 in mine), almost as high as the 10sh and 1 pound (£27) of the set, and yet when used it is way, way below almost all of the stamps of the set (80p., vs. £5 for the 1sh.3d. and £11 for the 2sh.6d.). Scott has a similar, though less extreme, listing. Odd (at least to me). Collin [edit: If you have a theory of why the odd CV, please chime in.] |

The Indian State of Cochin settled on grey/black as the colour for its 2 Anna definitives down the years. Here is an example on cover: SG 107, from 1946 used in May 1948 ( not 1923) And one of the stars of my Cochin collection SG 117a, imperf vertically |

Jammu & Kashmir wasn't afraid of the odd black stamp, either. This is the ½ Anna of 1874, SG 14 and they printed all their Official stamps in black: This is a sheet of the 4 Anna, SG O10, complete with faux perforations. |

While Wadhwan State only ever issued black stamps (or a black stamp, if you're a simple-lifer) SG 5a |

Barwani also issued some black stamps: The ¼ Anna black of 1923, SG 17: a sheet, including the printer's fingerprint (none genuine without this mark!) (The holes at the bottom of the sheet were for the twine used to bind these stamps into booklets of eight sheets. Legend has it that there were only 37 booklets made.) and also the reprinted ¼ Anna of 1933, SG 37A in a sheet. Rana Ranjitsingh, whose portrait appears on these stamps had died in 1930, and a new set of stamps, showing his infant son Rana Devi Singh, had appeared in 1932. Nevertheless, as collectors still wanted them, the plates were refurbished and the stamps were reprinted - and used, too, alongside those with the new Rana. (The holes at the side were made by the staple used to bind the sheets into booklets, each of 32 sheets this time. 300 booklets were made.) |
