Quote: i am thinking both the occupation and the organization too Quote: Hey Rod, didn't I send that to you a year or so ago with some stuff you bought from me? I have several of those I had found in some 1930's FDC's. Quite possibly SV, as you see, anything sent to me, is never wasted, everything is catalogued I gotta get a life. |

Lovely stamp Nethryk, looks like a Slania at first glance. What's the story/connection behind your avatar stamp? |

rod222 - I'm glad you liked the Denmark stonecutter stamp; Sverre Morken is certainly an outstanding engraver, and I would agree that he has a Slania-like ability to render photographs well as engravings. Since you asked, I chose my avatar stamp for three reasons: 1. Jules Verne's science fiction stories, particularly "20,000 Leagues," captured my imagination as a child, which is also when I began collecting stamps, 2. I greatly admire the stamp design and engraving work of French artist Jean Pheulpin (1907-1991), and 3. I actually somewhat resemble the bearded author, although I do trim my beard rather more closely. :) - nethryk |

The "author" mentioned "brick mason," that's as close as you can get, and why I mentioned stamps showing the Great Wall of China, of which there are many. |

Here's one more image for today: A Red Cross semi-postal stamp depicting a mason carrying a loaded brick hod, designed by Swedish graphic artist and illustrator Signe "Ham" Hammarsten-Jansson (1881-1970), combined grain-etched photogravure and printing by recess engraving and typography (cross), and issued by Finland on January 2, 1941, Scott No. B44, Facit No. 237. - nethryk |

No they've nothing to do with neither masonry nor mason brick. The DDR stamps, just show the arms of the former German comunist state. There you can see the white and blue collar workers tools. That's all.
As for the 2nd Reich, Weimar Republic and 3rd Reich stamps, I don't see the connection. Perhaps, "Germania" L.V. Beethoven and Hitler were masons?

Quote: A Red Cross semi-postal stamp depicting a mason carrying a loaded brick hod, Wow! it's been years since I have seen the word "Hod" used. Peculiarly, I saw a British bricklayer using one on TV just the other day. (Grand Designs) I have often used "Hod" in many of my legendary losses at scrabble. |

San Marino, the world's oldest surviving republic, was founded in 301 AD by Saint Marin (or Marinus). Tradition holds that Saint Marin was a stonemason by trade who fled religious persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian to become a hermit on Monte Titano. Here is an image of a stamp bearing the motto "By Labor and Virtue," depicting St. Marin at work, with the three fortresses of Monte Titano in the distance, designed by Italian poster artist M. Fucci, engraved by Alberto Blasi, printed by typography (Petiti Roma), and issued by San Marino on August 11, 1923 to publicize the San Marino International Exhibition, Scott No. 81. Proceeds from the sale of this stamp benefited a mutual aid society. - nethryk |
