In the heart of Musawwarat is the so-called Great Enclosure, a unique building complex of temples and terraces, surrounded by a maze of interconnected courtyards, passageways and ramps. Excavations have shown that it was re-built and extended periodically. The function of the Great Enclosure is still much debated and various suggestions as to its purpose have been put forward.  |

José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (1763-1838) was a Brazilian statesman, naturalist, geologist, professor and poet. During the early 1820s, Andrada e Silva served as minister of the interior and of foreign affairs in the newly independent country of Brazil. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of the statesman holding a rock hammer and a rock specimen, and depicting his armorial, honors awarded to him, and the Masonic emblem, designed by Brazilian illustrator Ivan Wasth Rodrigues (1927-2007), printed by lithography, and issued by Brazil on April 6, 1988 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Andrada e Silva's death, Scott No. 2131, plus an image of a painting of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, "the Patriarch of the Independence of Brazil," by Brazilian artist Benedito Calixto de Jesus (1853-1927). - nethryk  |
