Ran across this thread last night, and thought...that looks like fun. So spent an hour perusing covers with no luck. Tonight after a couple more hours I did find one that qualifies for October 19. Nothing special but I did think "Equality, Ala" was probably not the case in 1931.

Found another October 19 in the pile. An interesting enclosure is an order for two bottles of wine, in German.

According to Wikipedia, Eckley CO had a population of 257 in 2010, and a Post Office which has been in operation since the 1880s.

Is there any on the back to indicate where the blue Oct 21 1904 straight line date stamp came from?

The back is pretty much unreadable, but from what I can see I would guess it says Doniphan Ka, the town to which the letter was addressed. According to Wikipedia, the town was founded in November 1854 and incorporated in 1869. A post office was opened on March 3, 1855 and closed August 15, 1943.

Seems a good day to revisit this post.

On this day in 1918...

Very cool! I've seen that sort of painting on a good number of postcards (I have one from Yokohama in my collection), but this is the first time I've ever seen it on an envelope.

I reckon this is a bit off-topic, since it doesn't quite qualify as a cover, but here's a telegram from 12 November 1887. It was sent by someone named Mallmann to a teacher named Josef Schmidjörg in Vienna, and I bought it because it was written in the artificial international language Volapük.

The text reads: "Begob tudel vendelo no al meidling sod in zifalödi obik wipplingerstr 6 stöki kilid kömön." Translation: "I'm asking [you] to come this evening not to Meidling but rather to my city residence, Wipplingerstraße 6, third floor."

Today I have a mourning cover from Kneeland, in Humboldt County. Kneeland was a small town, which opened a post office on 7 Jun 1880, closed the office on 30 Apr 1891 and re opened on 12 Mar 1882 and is still open.
This cover is dated Nov 13 1906, the earliest known use of this town mark. How busy was the office? California Postmaster compensation figures are listed every two years, in the years 1905 and 1907, Kneeland made $49.63 in 1905 and $68.00 in 1907. Not real busy.

Postmarked 22 November 1906: A postcard printed and written in Panroman (a.k.a. Universal or Universal-Ling), an international auxiliary language created by Heinrich Molenaar and first published in 1903. This is the only example I've ever seen of correspondence written in this language.

In honor of Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, the inventor of Esperanto, born on 15 December 1859, here's a cacheted birthday cover from 1933:
