This chart is used to ID Handstamp user & date on precanceled stamps that started in 1938 from "Handstamp Dated Control Handbook & Checklist" by Jon M. Wilson & Rolston Lyon.
Group 1, all characters are the same height, initials & date.
C-1, 1.5mm
C-2, 2.
C-3, 2.5
C-4, 3.
C-5, 3.5
C-6, 4.
C-7, 4.5
C-8, 5.
Group 2, Initials are taller then date.
Initials Date
C-11 2.mm - 1.5mm
C-12 2.5 - 2.
C-13 3. - 2.5
C-14 3.5 - 3.
C-15 4. - 3.5
Group 3, Initials are shorter then date.
C-21 1.5mm - 2.mm
C-22 2. - 2.5
C-23 2.5 - 3.
C-24 3. - 3.5
C-25 3.5 - 4.
Any control handstamps that do not fit this chart are shown as type "S" then state height of initials & date.
Welcome anyone to provide examples you find to match this chart.

See if I can get this right. If I follow this chart, then this example would be in Group 2 (C-12), right?:  (The initials are 2.5mm high; the date is 2.0mm.) Now for the next question: What do the initials S. K. & F. stand for seeing that this precancel is from Philadelphia? |

Way to go wt1, perfect C-12. Great Example!
"S K & F" = Smith, Kline & French, a drugs store or distributor.
This type was used from May'40 to 1945.
"S.K.&F." was the 1st type 1938-40.
"SKF" was used for 2 months in 1955.

Another example found (Feb. '39). In this case I think this is a Group 3, Type C-21:  (Initials 1.5 mm; Date 2.0 mm) Any idea as to what the EEM initials stood for from Saint Louis? |

"EEM" was used from 1939-41 however it is listed as a C22 (2 - 2.5mm) check again.
Later "EEMCO" 1943-53 but company has not been identified. |

You're right (my mistake) ... my previous post was C-22 (2 mm & 2.5 mm). Now for another one:  In this case, I believe the initials and date are the same (at 2.0 mm), so it would be Group 1, C-2. Is that right? Any info. on the initials G.D.S.? |

"GDS" is G.D. Searle druggist. Only listed in 1942!
However, this time you found something new.
The one shown is not listed & should be, Please double check the heights & is that JUN, 1939? |

Frankie, No. You have to watch for it on Ebay or the like auctions. Often the seller will break it up into the 5 volumnes & could get expensive.
The reasearch library of the APS has 6 various copies some complete.
Lyon started the handbook in 1940 while during the 1980's Wilson updated the book but was not able to complete it. |

Champion Blower & Forge Co. this design does not fit the chart above, it is an "S4-2-2"
The "S" means special, the 4 is 4mm height of company letters, the following 2 is the height of the date in mm, the last 2 for the number of lines in the overprints. The last number is only used to ID the stamp if there is 2 or more lines.
This is the only know company to used this form of precancel in Lancaster, PA used in 1939-40. |

Thanks for the information. It's great to be able to identify the company that used this precancel. In fact, a quick web search provided the following image of the company in its day:  ...and its history ... (to start a company at age 17 must have been quite an accomplishment): Quote:
The origins of Champion Fan® date from a day in 1874 when Henry B. Keiper, then a 16 year old driving a furniture wagon, watched a blacksmith shoe one of his horses. Keiper realized that a rotary blower would relieve the blacksmith from pumping the bellows to fan the fire in the forge.
To meet this need, Keiper designed what he called a "gumball rotary forge," which utilized a rubber ball in the mechanism to permit the machine to operate by its own velocity when momentum had been gained.
Champion Blower & Forge Co. was founded in Lancaster, PA in 1875 by Keiper. Along with blacksmith forges and rotary blowers, Champion Blower & Forge Co. manufactured tire benders and tire shrinkers. In the early 1900's the company started manufacturing centrifugal fans, drill presses, and power hacksaws.Over the years it expanded its products to include a variety of fans and blowers, as well as additional machine tools. During the mid 1950's, the company went through another boom when its blowers were in great demand for fallout shelters. The demand, however, passed with the nuclear scare at the time.
Keiper, who died in 1920, was succeeded as president by his son-in-law, Charles B. Long. The Long family owned and operated the company until the late 1960's. It was sold in 1969 and the headquarters was relocated to Roselle, IL. It was again sold in 1978 and ceased operation in 1986 due to economic hardship. At this time its assets were purchased by Mike Wolf, Mike Orseno, and Wayne Hildebrand. In 1987 our new company began operation as Champion Fan Corporation. We are now proud to be part of the CVM Companies family. Our new facility at 125 Tubeway Drive in Carol Stream, IL, was opened in January, 2008. |

It is my understanding companies weren't required to control date these low value stamps, but I guess some companies elected to do it anyway. Any idea what company UGI from Brooklyn, NY would have represented from August 1941? It appears to me this is a C12 type, with initials 2.5 mm and date 2.0 mm.  |
