The fame of Thonet's design goes way beyond Europe. Michael Thonet (1796-1871) began designing and making furniture in Germany and then opened a factory in Vienna. The company is still run by the family. Picture from the catalog ca. 1900. See also the other posts of bent-wood furniture.

(I'm lucky to have three Thonet design chairs!)

Ikea celebrated 70 years in 2013. The company has been successful in many countries for many years. Perhaps Wielkopolski refers to production of furniture in Poland. There is a Polish breed of horse known by that name.

Furniture made of rattan, a kind of palm plant, can be works of art. Decorative, comfortable to sit in and light in weight. Plenty of hours go into making them.
