France J. J. Audubon February 27, 1995 The minisheet entitled Ornithological illustrator of the 19th Century contains four paintings: Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) Band-tailed Pigeon (Columba fasciata) Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) with a portrait and signature of John James Audubon (1785 - 1851).
The link to Audubon's complete work is the most precious thing I have found on this site!! BRAVO to those who put that together and for including it here.
If anyone is interested, I recommend his biography entitled "John James Audubon: the Making of an American" by Richard Rhodes. He truly lived a life beyond belief. This work, Birds of America, is monumental - I do not believe anyone could accomplish the same thing in modern times.
