Pioneer family : The child (front left) is Ingpen's (the stamp designer's)6-year-old daughter, Sophie Ingpen, the mother in the design is the artist's wife's grandmother (Mrs Salmon of Ballarat) whilst the grandmother in the design is taken from S. T. Gill's drawing of goldminers celebrating at Queen's Theatre in 1853. The governess at the back is Pelonemena, Frances Darling Batman, daughter of John Batman (founder of Melbourne). The grandfather in the design is a Riverina shepherd named Angus McNie and is based on an 1870 photo hanging in Clare Station, Victoria. The male figure at rear is Frederic Hitchins, a Geelong Councillor of the 1850s. |

A family appears on some Netherlands stamps.............. The two little girls on the left were tracked down and turned out to be members of the Van Bruggens family. They were still alive in 1974 and here they are with the married names, together again. |

I like the Netherlands stamp with the two little girls, and then tying them to the photo of the adults. Rod, where do you get such detailed info? You never cease to amaze me. |

Yes! Rod, great info on the Aussie stamps...especially the Pioneer issue I have many copies but did not stop once to consider that they might be real people. I am still just a collector, you are a philatelist!
Great work on the sisters from the Netherlands too!

Thanks guys! :) I am just a recreational collector, and a collator of useless information :)
The Netherlands story was in Australian Stamp News 1974
and the Pioneer family in the "Seven Seas" stamp catalogue. 1977
I just stand on others shoulders.

All information must be stored 'somewhere' but you seem to have the knack of ferreting it out at a second's notice...as I said before in another thread, you should sell copies of your database!

Here is an image of a "family stamp" engraved by Czeslaw Slania, from an "Old-time Christmas" booklet, issued by Sweden on November 10, 1971, Scott No. 906, Facit No. 747, plus a photo of the painting after which this stamp was designed, Söndagsafton I en dalastuga (Sunday Evening in a Farmhouse [in Dalecarlia], 1860), depicting a father fiddling for his dancing children, by Swedish artist and painter Amalia Lindegren (1814-1891). - nethryk |

Lovely topic!
Net, that's a beautiful stamp. It was interesting comparing it to the original painting.
All those tools in the foreground, though, make me nervous. That is the first thing that baby would go for when his mother put him down! |

Imprisoned man being visited by family, designed after contest-winning artwork by Faroese painter Rannvá Pálsdóttir Kunoy (1975- ), printed by lithogravure, and issued by Faroe Islands on June 2, 1986 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Amnesty International, Scott No. 147, Facit No. 140. - nethryk |
