"Allan Kardec" was the pen name of the French teacher and educator Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail (1804-1869), who is best known as the systematizer of Spiritism, for which he laid the foundation with the five books of the Spiritist Codification. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Kardec and his signature, printed by photogravure, and issued by Brazil on April 18, 1964 to commemorate the centenary of the publication of Kardec's work O Evanglho ("The Gospel"), Scott No. 978, plus a portrait of Allan Kardec, c.1865.

Allan Octavian Hume CB (1829-1912) was a civil servant, political reformer and amateur ornithologist and horticulturalist in British India. Hume was one of the founders of the Indian National Congress, a political party that was later to lead India's independence movement. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Hume and his signature, printed by photogravure, and issued by India on July 31, 1973 on the 25th anniversary of independence, Scott No. 588, plus an image of a Woodburytype portrait of A.O. Hume from 1889.

Here are images of the two similar stamps in a set featuring a portrait and the signature of Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), printed by photogravure, and issued by Italy on February 15, 1964 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the scientist's birth, Scott Nos. 888 & 889.

José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (1764-1850) led Uruguay's independence revolt against Spain, and is celebrated in Uruguay as a national hero. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a bust of José Artigas, one of his most famous quotations, and his signature, designed by Uruguayan artist Rudi Grams, printed by lithography (Colombino Bros. S.A.), and issued by Uruguay on May 17, 1965 as one of a set of three stamps commemorating the bicentenary of the hero's birth, Scott No. 720, plus an image of a painting (1884) of Artigas by Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Blanes (1830-1901). Note: This José Artigas quotation may be translated as "With freedom does not offend or fear."

Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844-1930) was a realist painter who was the first Russian artist to achieve European fame using specifically Russian themes. Here is an image of a stamp reproducing a self-portrait by Repin, and his autograph, designed by Valeri Pimenov (1920- ), printed by lithography, and issued by Russia (USSR) on August 5, 1969 as one of a set of five stamps commemorating the artist's life and work, Scott No. 3626, Zagorski No. 3703, plus a photo of Ilya Repin in 1900.

Erode Venkata Ramasami (1879-1973), called Periyar by his followers, was a social activist, politician and businessman who started the Self-Respect Movement in India and who promoted the principles of rationalism, self-respect, women's rights and eradication of caste. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of E. V. Ramasami and his signature, printed by photogravure, and issued by India on September 17, 1978, Scott No. 806, plus a photo of Periyar.

Jules François Camille Ferry (1832-1893) was a French republican and statesman who, as premier, succeeded in passing his eponymous laws of 1881 and 1882 making primary education in France free, mandatory, and non-clerical. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Ferry, and his signature, designed by French artist Huguette Sainson, engraved by Cécile Guillame, and issued by France on September 26, 1981 to commemorate the centenary of Ferry's laws, Scott No. 1770, Y&T No. 2167, plus an image of a photographic portrait of Jules Ferry by Nadar.

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher primarily known for Pessimism, a worldview that seeks to face up to the distasteful realities of the world and eliminate irrational hopes and expectations, and for the influence of his ideas on later existential philosophy and Freudian psychology. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Schopenhauer, and depicting his signature, designed by German artist Elisabeth von Janota-Bzowski (1912-2012), printed by photogravure, and issued by Germany on February 18, 1988 to commemorate the bicentenary of the philosopher's birth, Scott No. 1549, Michal No. 1357, plus an image of a painted portrait of Arthur Schopenhauer which may have been the model for this stamp's design.

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was an Austro-Hungarian journalist, playwright, political activist, georgist (economics philosopher), writer, and the founder of the World Zionist Movement. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Dr. Herzl gazing out over the Rhine at Basel, Switzerland, plus a tab with Herzl's signature on it, designed by Israeli artists Maxim and Gabriel Shamir, printed by lithography, and issued by Israel on August 31, 1960 to commemorate Herzl's birth centenary, Scott No. 183, plus a photo of Theodor Herzl.

Marthinus Wessel Pretorius (1819-1901) was the first president of the South African Republic, the compiler of the constitution of the Republic, and the founder of the city of Pretoria, which he named in honor of his father, the Boer leader Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius (1798-1853). Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Pretorius and his signature, printed by photogravure, and issued by South Africa on October 21, 1955 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of Pretoria, Scott No. 215, plus an image of a photo of Marthinus Pretorius.

Happy Birthday to Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), a Renaissance Polish mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at its center. Here is an image of an airmail stamp featuring a portrait of Copernicus, his signature, a diagram of his heliocentric model, and a USA Ranger spacecraft, designed and engraved by Claude Haley, and issued by Malagasy on January 22, 1974, Scott No. C121. Note: The Ranger program was a series of unmanned space missions by the United States in the 1960s whose objective was to obtain the first close-up images of the surface of the Moon.

Australia -Sweden Joint Issue
Daniel Solander
August 16, 2001
Daniel Carlsson Solander (1733 – 1782) was a Swedish naturalist. He was the first university educated scientist to set foot on Australian soil. He was on the Endeavour voyage to the southern Pacific Ocean. Solander helped make and describe an important collection of Australian plants while Endeavour was beached at the site of present-day Cooktown.
One of the two commemorative stamps bears Solander's portrait and signature.
