On October 10, 1977 Ireland issued a set of three 'golden (50th) anniversary" stamps. The 12 p value (Hib #C245) of this set, shown here, commemorates the founding of the Agricultural Credit Corporation.

From wikipedia, "The Agricultural Credit Corporation was founded in September 1927 and was one of the first creations of the Irish Free State."

Through three definitive series from 1968-82, Ireland used Celtic animal images as the basic designs, done by Heinrich Gerl. One of the higher value images is a winged ox. Shown here is the 10 p value (Hib #D66) from the 1971-4 series in decimal currency, printed on watermarked paper.

The winged ox image was probably first used by the ancient Assyrians. The second image shows a 13th century Christian ivory plaque. To Christ's right are the apostles John (top) and Luke (bottom. Luke is associated with the ox, and John with the eagle. Coincidentally, the Celtic eagle is the image used on the highest value of the Irish definitives discussed here.

Two oxen pull a large Christmas tree through the snow on this U.S. Christmas/anti-tuberculosis seal of 1947.

Interestingly, the seal saves as a letter seal on a 1947 cover from Dresden (Soviet Zone), Germany to Detroit, Michigan, USA..

Perhaps the Christmas seals were earlier sent from Detroit to Dresden. Using a letter seal such as this one would alert the person/relative that they have received a charitable gift from them. Where the correspondence remains, most of my covers from this period deal with needed materials being sent to Germany from the U.S.A.
