Q/ Any relation to George D Mercer, graphic artist, ~1924-2012 ?

I have no idea what to make of the middle initial as drawn.

"T" seems more likely than the "D" in the obituary.

Maybe the obituary was dictated over the phone?

Maybe it is the same guy, and he changed his mind?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey (whose father felt the lack of a middle name and, like, just chose one)

Following the script, top to bottom, it could even be an "S"

Not to be confused with George Mercer of the US Postal Service whom designed this fellow.. (I am presuming a different person)
American series Sc#1613
(And the embossed Uncle Sam stationery 15c 16c)

George D would have been ~27 in 1951, which is not an especially unlikely age to be doing FDC cachet artwork, so I do not see how we rule-out his also being the George T who signed the cachet.

Maybe he changed his middle name?

Maybe the obit clerk mis-heard "D" for "T"?

Maybe they are two different guys, even father/son, both of whom applied art skills to postal applications?

Maybe one of our genealogy-literate members can resolve this?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

What am I missing? How does this several-days-old discussion of George Mercer have anything to do with huh-worthiness?

From the stamp to the FDC cachet to the artist.

What should we do? Start a separate thread?

If you want to get us back on target, why not post a huh-stamp?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey
