Here is an image of a stamp depicting a portrait of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), designed after a painting attributed to Spanish poet, scholar and painter Juan Chandra de Jáuregui y Aguilar (1583-1641), engraved and printed by Casa de Moneda y Especies Valoradas, Chile, and issued by Costa Rica on November 10, 1947 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Cervantes's birth, Scott No. 249, SG No. 459. Note: Modern scholarship does not accept this, or any other graphic representation of Cervantes, to be authentic. - nethryk |

Here is your Hero rod I'm sure you saw the movie with Charlton Heston & Sophia Loren. Those spectacular epics of the late fifties, early sixties were fantastic. Cast of thousands and real stars. Now nothing but virtual. _01.jpg) |

Back to Don Quixote: Juan María Montalvo Fiallos (1832-1889) was an Ecuadorian author and essayist who wrote a sequel to Cervantes's masterpiece, entitled Capítulos que se le Olvidaron a Cervantes ("Chapters Cervantes Forgot"), published posthumously in 1895. Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting Don Juan Montalvo and Cervantes, engraved and printed by the Institute de Gravure, Paris. This stamp was originally issued by Ecuador on May 2, 1949 for the 4th centenary of Cervantes's birth, but was subsequently overprinted to publicize an adult education campaign and issued by Ecuador in 1951, Scott No. C225, SG No. 939. - nethryk |

Nice one Nethryk, one of the more obscure Cervantes issues. I had not seen this before.

History and stamps seem to be made for each other. Here is an image of a stamp featuring another "portrait" of Cervantes, designed and engraved by Serban Zainea, and issued by Romania on December 17, 1955 for the 350th anniversary of the 1605 publication of the first volume (the second volume was published ten years later) of Don Quixote, Scott No. 1077. - nethryk |

I have my collection of 16 pages mounted about Quijote. I have scans of it. If some one want to check, I can send it by e-mail.
