The Obelisk of Theodosius
...........
On stamps is an ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Thutmose III (1479-1425 BCE) the sixth pharaoh of Egypt`s 18th dynasty. The obelisk was set up to the south of the seventh pylon of the great temple of Karnak. It was transported from Egypt in order by Roman emperor Theodosius I (378-392 AD) in 390 and put in the Hippodrome of Constantinople to commemorate emperator`s 20 years on the throne. The obelisk made of red granite was originally 30 m tall (now 18.5 m). |

Luxor Obelisk

The Luxor Obelisk standing at the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris. It is made of yellow granite, is 23 metres high and weighs over 250 tons. The obelisk was raised by pharaoh Ramesses II and stood at the entrance to the Luxor Temple. In 1829 the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt offered the Luxor Obelisk to France. It arrived in Paris in 1833 and was placed in the center of Place de la Concorde in 1936. |

Egyptian obelisk of Seti I

In the centre of the Piazza del Popolo, Rome standing an Egyptian obelisk of Seti I from Heliopolis. He was pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt and the father of Ramesses II. The obelisk was brought to Rome in 10 BC and originally set up in the Circus Maximus. It is 24 m high.----------------------------- Hi lithograving, I am topical stamp colector so all my colections are topical. Some are very small (10-20 stamps), the biggest is famous women (2500 stamps). Overage is 300-500 stamps (not only stamps but also postmarks, postal stationary...). Some topics where I participate my posts are "mine", like famous women, bridges, books, flags, Egypt... For others I asked my friends to sent me scans of stamps I want to post. They collect almost "everything". |

Lateran Obelisk

The Lateran Obelisk is the largest standing ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world (32 m). Brought to Rome in 357 by Constantius II to decorate the Circus Maximus. It was cut by Thutmose III the sixth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty for the temple of Amun in Karnak and is the tallest obelisk ever successfully cut. But it was arected 35 years later by next pharaoh Thutmose IV. |

Obelisk on St. Peter`s Square - Roma

An Egyptian obelisk on St. Peter`s Square is made of red granite and is 25.5 m tall. It was originally erected at Heliopolis, Egypt, by an unknown pharaoh of the Fifth dynasty. Emperor Caligula ordered to transfer abelisk in 37 AD from Egypt to Rome. |

Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt houses the world`s largest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It has 140,000 items. The first museum was established in 1835. The present Egyptian Museum in Cairo was designed at the end of 19th century and inaugurated in 1902. |

The Colossi of Memnon

The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III the ninth pharaoh of 18th dynasty ruled 1390-1352 BC. The Colossi were standing at the entrance to Amenhotep`s memorial temple, one of the greatest in Egypt. |

Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone is a stele inscribed with a decree in 196 BC on behalf of Egyptian King Ptolemy V. The decree is writen in three scripts: Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and Ancient Greek. It was found in place Roseta in the Nile Delta in 1799 by French soldier. This trilingual inscription helped Champollion to deciphered Ancient Egyptian inscriptions - hieroglyphs.
