I scanned these ages ago - intended for the "maps on stamps", then, "favourite overprints" - finally they have found their true home in this thread

These were issued in 1949 and 1950 repectively. Shuna is a small island of the Argyll coast in the west of Scotland. I saw this island every day growing up. It even features in my wedding photos!

(Shuna on the right, me on the left).

Despite this, I had no idea these stamps existed until fairly recently. They certainly haven't been in use for a long time. I am trying to find out more about them. I think I will be relying on local info as I haven't found out much from the web.

Wow! Stampgal,
not seen these in ten years of collecting.

Which Shuna is it?

The first one in this link, Firth of Lorn.
A house burned down when I was a child because the fire brigade were despatched to the wrong Shuna, luckily no-one was hurt.
Its a tiny island which has never had many year-round inhabitants. My Great Grndparents actually farmed there for a very short period. It is privately owned by an aristocratic family - not unusual for Scottish islands and estates. The family still live locally, but not on the island. There are a handful of holiday houses and some fishfarm buildings. I was last there about 10 years ago, but my mum was there recently for a visit.
I assume the stamps were postally used, I have found auctions for them on cover, but I haven't seen an image.
Arduaine on the mainland was the nearest mainland PO, it is long since shut, though I do remember it as my Dad used to take his boat over to Arduaine for fuel, and it was a great day out for my brother and I to go with him. Aaaa - nostaglia!

Interesting stamps and story. I can read on the stamps some places have gaelic names. Do you speak the Gaelic? Scotland looks so beautiful, the sea and the mountains. Daniel

If I recall correctly that coast was very friendly
to the English after the foray with the Spanish Armada.
The remnant of the Spanish fleet sailed north,
and around the north tip,
down the west coast, quite a number of sail foundered.

I speak a little Gaelic. The names on the map, I can have a stab at... I'll have to check to be sure, I'm a little rusty...
Rudh'an aoil - lime point (a lot of lime was produced in this area in stone lime kilns)
Rudha Salach - dirty point (?!)edit or could be inlet point.
Sgeir Chreagag - stony rock
Poll na Gile I'm not sure without looking it upedit - ravine pool
Rudh'an trilleachan - three island point
Port na cro - sheep point
I think they may have been a little more romantic left untranslated...
