Chess player, chessboard and pieces, designed by Hungarian-born American artist and illustrator István Bányai (1949- ), printed by lithogravure, and issued by Hungary on October 28, 1992 to publicize the European Team Chess Championship, held in Debrecen, Scott No. 3376. The Russian team won handily. Bonus: An image of an amusing illustration by István Bányai entitled "Inflation," which appeared in The Atlantic magazine in 2005, showing "stamps" from the USA's "Body Mass Commemorative Series."

There are about 200,000,000 Bridge players in the world, yet, to the best of my knowledge, there have only been 10 sets of stamps commemorating it.

And unluckily for you lot, today is the first day of my holiday, and I have nothing better to do....

And just before I go, what do you make of these three disreputable characters?

a painting "The players" by Pavel Fedotov, famous russian artist
shows the final scene a game of cards.

The picture has an almost mystical sense: the loser is looking at the viewer blankly, and the figures of other players, as if descended from the empty frames on the wall, cast an ominous shadow
