Many thanks Billys. Very interesting.

Here's another hexagon (rural usage?)

Hi AnthonyUK,

Very difficult to decipher the cancel, I can't read any indications of city or village or railway line.

The stamp was issued around 1925, so we have to search with CDS that can match this date.
The only one I found is here :

http://marcophilie.org/mqp-timbre-a...ement-1.html

Could be from any where in France.
Sorry but can't help more.

Regards.

Billys.

I believe this is a TPO cancel for Constantinople-Galata on a French Levant stamp of 1902:

Yes? No? Maybe?

Hi Cjd,

Yes absolutely, it's from Turkey, Constantinople post office of Galata (the principal in this city).

You have it in the reference "Marcophilie" site here :

Well done Cjd.

Regards.

Billys.

Well, an office is still nice...I was hoping for TPO...
Thanks for the i.d. I keep forgetting you can drill down that deeply at that site.

Thought I'd bump this up since I'm on a French kick right now. Gonna add some of my own as I find them, but for now here are some French cancels on Spanish stamps.

First row - 4c orange & 12c carmine from 1860 - #1896 (Marseille), 12c blue pair from 1862, 12c blue and red from 1865, 50c blue (1873) and 40c violet (1874) all have #2240, also Marseille.

Found this perfectly centered s.o.n. cancel in my France stash. Pretty cool I thought.

Hi Spain_1850,
Do you know the mail route for your Spain - Marseille?
I investigated a cancel I showed on Page 1 - http://goscf.com/t/19850#19850
This had an 'Estrangero Barcelona' cancel which I believe went via Marseille.
Could yours be the return route?

Here is a losange petit chiffre from Rossillon in eastern France.

The town had a population of 554 in 1856 (approximately around the time of usage).

This one, BP 1, is an ambulant (railway post office) cancel for the first run of the Bordeaux to Paris train.

I don't know specific dates of usage for this particular cancel, but this general category of cancels was in use from 1854 to 1863.

And one more for now, from the Cherbourg to Paris train:

This seems like a late usage on this stamp.

I'm having trouble finding out anything about this one.
I have found a reference in an auction item referring to a cover to China.

The day's first train run from Marseille to Lyon.

The run in the other direction, back to Marseille, would be LM1

Many thanks CJD. That makes sense. The route to China would have had to get to a port in the cover I mentioned.

Terry - I feel you man. I wish I could find more too. As it is it's the single, most precisely centered cancellation in my collection.
