On June 8, 1989 Austria issued this stamp (Mi #1962) to commemorate the centenary of the Achensee Railway. This is a short line featuring cogwheel steam locomotives. From wikipedia, "The Achensee Railway is a 6.78 km (4.21 mi) long , meter-gauge railway running between Jenbach and Seespitz on Lake Achensee in Tyrol, Austria. Within its length it rises some 440 meters (1444 ft) in height with the steeper sections using the Riggenbach rack system. It is Europe's oldest cog railway which is still steam operated.."   |

Here is Austria's August 8, 1986 stamp (Mi #1854) commemorating the centenary of Salzburg Local Railway. Stamp depicts a tramway steam locomotive and an electric, articulated railcar. Photo shows train at Itzling stop. In the last ten years, the service area of the Salzburg Local Railway has been expanded several times. From wikipedia, "Today, the S-Bahn runs to Lamprechtshausen and Ostermiething every half hour, and every 15 minutes at peak times....15,000 people are transported every day, 4.75 million annually."   |

The railroad from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in the south coast of Cambodia was constructed with the assistance of the governments of France, West Germany and the PR of China. The construction lasted for a decade and the new line inaugurated in 1969. The new railroad cut down the reliance on Saigon port of Vietnam and Khlong Toei port of Thailand. From wikipedia, "List was the leading promoter of railways in Germany. His proposals on how to start up a system were widely adopted."  |

"The Valley Railway", issued by Israel on December 6, 2011. The "The Valley Railway" is the nickname for the Haifa branch line of the famed Hijaz Railway, which was built in the latter days of the Ottoman Empire to connect Damascus to Medina and Mecca in the Hijaz region of the Arabian Peninsula. The stamp depicting Hijaz Railway "Hartmann 2-8-2" steam engine and a train against the background of the Jezreel Valley landscape. The stamp tab depicting Turkish period buildings at the Kfar Yehoshua station, which were renovated and restored and currently serve as a visitor's center:  Mail train from the British Mandate on Palestine period, issued by Israel on May 26, 2013. This stamp was not issued as a single, only in SS depicting postal vehicles in Eretz Israel:

This April 4, 1989, 50 pf stamp (Mi #3240) of the DDR was issued to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the first long-distance railway line in Germany. Route was between Dresden and Leipzig. The stamp shows an artist's rendition of the Leipzig Train Station in Dresden with an incoming engine and passenger-filled cars, as ithis would have appeared in 1839.  |

This July 17, 1979 special event cover of the DDR commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Thuringian Forest Short Rail Line. Cachet shows an old electric tram and the rail line from Gotha to Tabarz and Waltershausen. Blue-green hand stamp indicates that the cover was carried on the Thuringian Forest line from Tabarz to Gotha. Cover front shows pictorial postmarks from both Tabarz (17.7.79) and Gotha (17.7.79). Drucksache/printed matter rate of 5 pf is paid by modern electric train stamp (Mi. #2414) of April 17, 1979.   |
