In 1803 Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's Corps of Discovery to find a water route to the Pacific and explore the uncharted West. The expedition began making its way up the Missouri aboard a 55-foot-long (17-meter-long) keelboat and two smaller pirogues. I'm not certain but believe that the rendering on this stamp (Scott 1063), issued on July 28, 1954 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the expedition, is of one of the pirogues. The stamp depicts Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea landing on the Missouri riverbank. |
