On September 13, 1977 the DDR issued a set of five stamps featuring items in the collection of the Dresden Transport Museum. The 20 pf value (Mi #2256) depicts an aircraft flown by flight pioneer Hans Grade (1879-1946). From wikipedia, "...on October 30, 1909, flying a new monoplane design, he won the 40,000 Reichsmark 'Lanz-Preis Der Lufte' for the first German to fly a flat '8' in a German aircraft around two pylons 1000 meters apart." Another classic aircraft from the Dresden Transport Museum, the Junkers F 13, is shown on page 17 of this thread. |

Here is Germany's October 9, 2008, 1.45 euro stamp (Mi #2698) commemorating the centenary of motorized flight in the country. The stamp shows an artist's conception of Hans Grade (1879-1946) making this historic flight. From wikipedia, "Hans Grade was born in Koeslin, Pomerania. On October 28, 1908 he successfully conducted the first motor flight over German soil in a motorized triplane of his own construction at Magdeburg." |

This set of two semi-postal stamps (Sc #s B36A-B36B) featuring "modern planes" was issued by the Netherlands Indies on October 15, 1938 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Dutch East Indies Royal Air Lines. A 5c surtax on each stamp (not shown) benefitted the Aviation Fund in the Netherlands Indies. Inscription on bottom of stamps indicates that they were only valid for postage through November 30, 1938 (1 1/2 months from date of issue). |
