Here is a 1934 German cancel advertising the 'kraftpost". Cancel reads, "use the kraftpost...secure, fast, easy". The kraftpost would later be called "postbus". From wikipedia, "A postbus is a public bus service that is operated as a part of local mail delivery as a means of providing public transport in rural areas with low levels of patronage where a normal bus service would be uneconomical or inefficient." |

Austrian (born in Romania) graphic artist Ludwig Hesshaimer designed a series of transportation-themed labels for the WIPA '33 stamp exhibition in Vienna. One of these labels features a postkraftwagen/post bus very much like the one depicted on DavidR's postmark shown in the posting above. |

This 5 centime stamp (Sc #370) of Switzerland was issued on March 9, 1959 to publicize the July '59 opening of the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. The stamp shows a postbus with a chassis that extends far beyond the vehicle's rear axle. It has the look of postbuses manufactured by Adolph Saurer AG of Abron, Switzerland. This company was in production from 1903 -1982. The stamp may show a prototype which was never put into production. |
