"Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492..." This pretty stamp was designed by Erna de Vries after a Florentine woodcut of 1493 which appeared in the Giuliano Dati book "Narrative of Columbus". Perhaps it is the very first picture of his adventures.

Yes, it is a pretty stamp but, for my money, they coulda just engraved the wood cut, slipped the necessaries into the vignette, and gone with black ink on white paper.
