At this time of year reindeer deserve special attention. Only caribou and Greenland reindeer have been on the thread so far, but these are reindeer of Lappland and have served the peoples there long before Santa discovered their ability to pull a sleigh, even into the air. Rudolf has very unusual abilities to lead the team.

Here is one of four WWF stamps, on an FDC to also show the animal itself. No more than three photogrpahs exist of the animal in thw wild, all others are of one captured female that died in captivity, now a very poor stuffed specimen in Hanoi (but I think it has been "refigured"). The saola occurs only in the mountains of Laos and Vietnam,is known only from that one female, stories of hunters and some skulls. It probably is the most endangered hoof and horns animal, and certainly one of the most endangered mammals, period.

Gazelles, with an airplane passing overhead, an airmail stamp designed and engraved by Claude Hertenberger, and issued for use in Somali Coast on July 7, 1958, Scott No. C21. Note: Scott (2008 ed.) identifies (I believe erroneously) these animals as "Mountain Reedbucks," an antelope found in mountainous areas of much of sub-Saharan Africa.
