All modern hinges are made by one company Prinz in Germany. They are then repackaged and sold under different names.

I do lick hinges. "Licking" isn't really the proper term as I try to just barely touch them to the tip of my tounge. If I over-moisten it, I'll either throw the hinge away or dab it on the back of my hand to get rid of some of the excess...Some collectors use a sponge or a q-tip or something along those lines to moisten hinges instead of licking them, I just find it easier to control the moisture using my tongue, plus it's more convenient.

I do the same and couldn't agree more. I will also just barely touch the tip of my pinky finger to my tongue and then transfer a bit of the moisture to the hinge. For now (as long as I can still find them), I'm only using the old Dennison hinges.

redwoodrandy,

Pricey is the word, but still worth every cent. They are the only hinges for me!

I've been using G & K from Subway almost exclusively last couple years. They stay on fine. Only issue is that once a package is opened, the hinges tend to fold and bend. Slows me down a bit as I have to straighten out almost every hinge.

I don't think "staying on" is the issue...once they are on, they are stuck on like concrete

I cut my hinges in half diagonally. This gives each half the shape of a triangle. I attach the pointed end to the stamp. Because of the smaller surface area of the hinge on the stamp and the triangular shape, it tends to come off the stamp more easily without damaging it although sometimes a small amount of the hinge will remain. As a bonus I get 2000 hinges out of a 1000 packet.

Bringing back an old thread that had a loose end to it I'm wondering about. There as mention of the Grafo-Art Concordance of Minkus & Scott Catalog Numbers in this thread. Sounds like a potential Rosetta Stone for those collecting with Minkus. Did anyone track this down to find out more about this? Quite a bit of fun reading this thread again too. Some of the same issues from nine years ago still apply today!

landoquakes,

Thank you for bumping this one. It was fun going back through it.

Last week I placed an order for the two sections of part 1 of the MSG. I've been thinking about it off and on for the past several years, but usually found a way to talk myself out of it. Eventually I'd like to pick up parts 2 through 5 which would take me up to 1973 (the year I was born). I have no illusions about ever completing such an album, but it will be fun to try.

Statesman, let us know what you think of working on the Reds. Agree with floortrader, funny how the talk of hinges is timeless! After battling the Big Blues for so long, it's been fun to dive into the MSG, Not perfect for sure, but definitely more complete sets. You can tell the designer had some fun with it too. I especially like how France stamps are displayed. especially the higher values like the airmails. There are some differences between the 2 volume Minkus and the three volume version. The three volume needed to pack more stamps in and also include Minkus cat numbers.
