Engraver Called Maple

Hi

Between 1900-1920 (more or less)in American Banknote Co. there was a stamp engraver called Maple (last name)

Anyone has any information about him (first name, etc) ?

"William H Maple entered ABNC on January 22, 1906. He engraved stamps and ornamental figures on bills for several countries and his last works went to Canada in 1939."

William H. Maple was a square letter engraver for American Bank Note Company. The date of January 22, 1906 for his entry into the employment of ABN is confirmed by a little leather looseleaf volume I have which is an alphabetical directory of engraving personnel of the bank note industry which ABN maintained. It appears they kept track of engravers (picture, letter, and general engravers), designers, transnfer men, etc. throughout the US industry as many of them at one time worked at ABN (or sought jobs there). I also have Maple's scrapbook, which indicates that much of his work was for securities, ranging from stock and bond titles, to bond coupon text, but included also is lettering for bank notes, and, it appears, one or more of ABN's promotional stamps done in the 1920s. The work for Canada referred to in an earlier poster's message appears to have been the undertints probably for the 1937 issues of the Bank of Canada.
Letter engravers are hard to document because ABN did not keep separate records of their work, the way ABN did for picture engraving (generally other than stamps). The stamp index cards are presumably the source of information as to which stamps the picture and letter engravers worked on.

Great cover, thanks for showing it. The catalogue says it was from William B. Wells, who was a square letter engraver with ABN first in Philadelphia and later for a year in New York, before joining the Bureau in 1917. He would have known Maple from his time with ABN in New York. Wells worked on many stamps.
