Here is France's June 14, 1955 thirty franc stamp (Sc #771) commemorating the Lumiere brothers and the 60th anniversary of French motion pictures. From wikipedia, "The Lumiere brothers, Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas Lumiere and Louis Jean Lumiere, were French manufacturers of photography equipment, best known for their Cinematographe motion picture system and the short films they produced between 1895 and 1905, which places them among the earliest filmmakers." |

Netherlands 2006 a stork carrying around an SLR on a strap. Issued in a mini-sheet bearing 5. Look closely at the stamp and you'll see an apple and bottle of red wine laid out for a picnic. Fits into the silly category along with the Japanese cat and the Jersey cow, both of which were posted earlier. |

Soviet Union Nov. 1970 issue Sc. 3788 Out of a set of six promoting tourism, the highest denomination depicts a tourist with camera in front of an automobile. I gather this was toward the start of a massive and successful push to increase production (and purchase) of automobiles in the old Soviet Union. I'm just now noticing her trendsetting pantsuit, too. Red cars, red pantsuit ... all very patriotic. |

Issued in 2000 by Mexico, Sc. 1914 is a mini-sheet of 5 stamps celebrating 100 years of photography in Mexico. There's an awful lot going on on this mini-sheet, but in particular let me point out the two stamps at the middle of the sheet bear attributed works with the photographers' names on them: Manuel Alvarez Bravo top middle and Tina Modotti bottom middle. The two stamps at the right include eight images each, all of which are credited in very fine print, not entirely readable even with a 10x loupe. |

Here is a 1988 issue from Peru (Scott 938). Commemorates the creation of the Peruvian Journalist Fund, and shows a photojournalist with his SLR, along with an helicopter, a newspaper, etc. And here is one from the Marshall Islands, 1997 (Scott 627c). One from a mini-sheet of 16 stamps celebrating events and innovations of the first decade of the 20th century. This one shows a man with a Brownie box camera taking a photograph of his idealized classic nuclear family. That was the Eastman Kodak camera which opened photography to the masses when it went on sale in 1900 for $1.00 US. . |
