Dr. Louis Thomas (1887-1976) was a photographer who produced a large collection of photographs of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Dr. Thomas and depicting his camera and some local island scenes, designed by Saint-Pierre artist Patrick Derible (1956- ), engraved by Cécile Guillame, and issued by Saint Pierre and Miquelon on May 4, 1988, Scott No. 509, plus a link to an Amazon.com page for a book about Thomas's photographs, entitled The Islands of Dr. Thomas (2012), by Francoise Enguehard: http://www.amazon.com/The-Islands-T.../155081382X#- nethryk  |

Flipping the script slightly, this is the only known example of a pictorial cancel from the Civil War era depicting a camera. Ex-Baryla, from his award-winning Civil War Sun Tax exhibit.  |
