Australian KGV Stamps - A Bit Of Help Required

I went to the local second hand book store and picked up a 2002 rennicks Stamps of Australia catalogue. It seems to be lacking quite a lot in the way of information. Really is more of a price guide. I went to my coin dealer today and had a look at some of his stamps. He has given me a lend of Bursden White The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue: King George V which seems to have quite a bit of information in it.

Whilst I was there I picked up a few more side faces:

I couldnt find 1/2d OS perf in the rennicks book I got so maybe these arent genuine?

I liked the cancels on these having been to both places numerous times:


The next few all had cancels from places I've visited and liked so I got them as well. Dont know why I got the orange 4d though. Its quite light but definitely not the lemon yellow.






All up I walked away $35 poorer. Was this an ok price for this lot? I expect to pay a little bit too much when im starting out just as I did with coins but the only way i'll ever find out if the prices are reasonable is if someone chimes in.

The OS ½d (what a shame the pair is separated)are SG O38 or O61 depending on watermark and are catalogued at £2.75 and £2 respectively (2011 catalogue).

The one bargain I can see here for your $35 is the 5d brown OS overprint, which catalogues at £27. I'd say well done!

As for centreing, expect to find more poorly centred OS than anything else, as that's what the worst centred stamps were used for!

Thanks for the tip KGV collector! The coin side of the forum has a search bar on the right column menu. Do you have one here at SCF? or will I need to go through each page of the main forum till I find it?

Thanks for the link cjd. The coin side of things is set out a little differently but is essentially the same. I've now located the search function here so that should help me in my learning adventure.

I dug out my great grandmothers collection earlier. First time I have ever looked at it. There is a good selection including many world stamps. Unfortunately she used double sided tape to stick them into the album and after 50 years the acid in the tape has ruined many of the stamps

I'll have to start a new thread for some of the pre federation Queen Victoria stamps. Its interesting to see each state issued their own stamps. When I think about it it does make sense though.

I too, am a new stamp collector, and it's so refreshing to see helpful advice and direction to a newbie.
I have many KGVs to work through, and the picture posted by Rod is extremely helpful to me too.
