Well, here is the second item of news I heard in as many days. I heard that Stanley Gibbons has bought Bid Start. According to some sources, it is already a done deal.

My next question is, will this be a good thing for collectors and dealers alike, or a nightmare??

for me, it can't be negative... I have bought maybe 10 items on bidtstart in the last 10 years...
perhaps their offerings will be improved in my collecting areas...

Fair answer Chasa.

My fear is, will they increase fees etc as eBay has been doing lately?

Here's a snip from what the bidStart CEO wrote in the e-mail that went out to the bidStart mailing list:

Quote:
To be clear, bidStart.com will continue to exist, and provide a marketplace and community for buyers and sellers of all sizes. There are no plans to dramatically change our business model, or to increase our fees. However, we are planning on significantly increasing the level of service, support and features we offer. We also have many exciting features planned, many of which will make it easier than ever before for smaller sellers to get started on bidStart. The objective for Stanley Gibbons is to "utilize its brand, network, industry expertise and financial strength to rapidly grow the bidStart platform and to build on bidStart's technology to create a substantial collectibles trading platform".

Prior to the buyout, I was on the email list for both BidStart and Stanley Gibbons.

After the buyout, the number of emails I'm receiving has tripled at least -- maybe quadrupled.

Most of the new emails are pushing the Stanley Gibbons INVESTMENT department.

I knew there had to be a down-side to it.

At least based on my experience, it looks like that's coming from the SG mailing list, rather than from Bidstart. I'm on the Bidstart mailing list, and get those mailings regularly, and there hasn't been any kind of increase in number, nor have I received any from SG.

Just my perspective,
