There's an interesting story online from the Motley Fool about how private interests are using Congress to gut and destroy the Postal Service especially by FedEx and the Cato Institute. It also examines the myths that the mainstream media floats to the public. Well worth the read.
I am very tired of people accusing national postal services of "running deficits." The fact is that corporations such as post offices controlled by elected officials are generally underfunded and they therefore have a revenue shortfall - not an operating deficit. In the USA there is the added burden of those same elected officials not allowing USPS of operating in a business-like manner because that would be - give me a break - "unfair competition" with the private sector.
The way Congress handicap's the USPS is a joke. They can't make their own decisions to run efficiently without Congressional approval, and yet Congress mandates that they fund the pension fund for a bazillion years. Seems to a be a lot of people who can do without Saturday delivery except for Congress....
