There was also an episode of "My Three Sons" where Ernie was doing his collection and tricked a girl into giving him "His white whale" the Liberian Triangle.

In a film titled "Black Book" directed by Paul Verhoeven, one of the female Dutch Resistance trades stamps to a philatelist German officer for favours. Apart from the stamp collecting reference the film is an excellent portrayal of the Dutch Resistance, often neglected by war film producers in favour of the French resistance units. Highly recommended.

Yes, this is a marvelous reference! Wonderful film and the SS officer's hobby is important in plot development. A must see.

Hi jorija,

It is one of my favourite films. Verhoeven has said his film was based on several real events that occurred in The Hague when he was growing up during the German occupation. The "Black Book" of the title is supposed to have been kept by a Mr De Boer, who negotiated between the Dutch resistance and the German army, and which is supposed to have contained a list of traitors. He was shot at the end of the war and the killers were never found.

No stamps in this film of a marvellous book by David Brin, but what an evocative portrayal of the joy of letter writing. And the men and women who made it work.

I think it was one of the Foyle's war programmes which has a letter rack in the background. Now given this series is based in the 1940's , one of the letters has a QEII wilding -- Whooops!
Now that's what I call an early release LOL

I was watching "the men who built America" series and there was a few stamps through that but they wasn't correct for the period. They was using one of 1920's "reds" as a stamp from the 19-teens. it was pretty obvious too.

I thought I'd add to this thread. It seems the old TV Series Hart to Hart (Season 3) is just coming out on DVD. One of the episodes features stamps in the plot as described here:

Quote:
The Harts visit the gallery of a well-known stamp collector to see the Vermillion, the most valuable stamp in the world. However, they soon gain possession of the stamp, and find their lives are in serious danger.

Nice interesting postings in here.

About 2 weeks ago, My wife and I were watching an episode of Poirot. Poirot was going through his collection of Belgian stamps. They were ordinary stamps, but, what made me laugh was his comment when Captain Hastings asked him out and he replied, 'wait a moment, I am mounting my large stamps ahead of my small stamps'. Needless to say, his collection must have been in some sort of haphazard order.

I'm a few weeks behind on my PBS Masterpiece Mystery! series.

The current series, Grantchester, is based on the Rev. Sidney Chambers. In episode 3, he receives a letter from a German woman he met in episode 1. There's a (relatively) long shot of the stamped cover.

Note the image below is a photo of my tv, so quality is low, but I instantly thought of this thread and wanted to share the stamp and postmark.

It's a good series, by the way. Each episode is one hour and the 'mysteries' are fairly easy to solve. But there is good partnership between the priest and the detective. And there is a good unrequited love storyline.

Interesting Kirk

I don't think that I have seen any of these episodes, nor have I heard of them.

I will have to keep a look-out for them.

The movie "Burglar" with Whoopi Goldberg has a scene of her stealing a $2.60 mint Graf Zeppelin. It features a nice close up. Later she licks the stamp and sticks it on a guys head (from what I remember)....

classic cinema.

As I recall that movie, the value of the stamp was a lot more than just a single $2.60 Graf Zepplin.
