I can take or leave the France Libre overprints from most French colonies - will happily take them if they arrive as part of a country lot, but not fussed if the gaps remain. At least some of the other colonies' issues got more genuine postal use.

Thanks again rod222 for the hint on editing, but apparently it only works for something less than 24 hours (I suspect up until the server runs end-of-day). It's kind of a moot point, since once my wife comes in my office and says "Get off that %##@* computer!! You've been on there for &^#@!!~& hours enough already!!!", I'm afraid it's too late.

Anyhow, this is the 2023 stamp that should have been in the place of the duplicate I uploaded above:

2023:

Here are a couple of covers that were given to me by a friend of mine in the Clearwater Stamp Club, that were sent to him by Monsieur J.J. Tillard in November and December of 2003.

Apparently they were having some service issues in France as mentioned in his hand written note which I think translates as "Due to strikes in France Please forward this letter to the USA".

Just a bit of modern postal history!

Al

I just received a letter from France, but noticed the sender used SPM stamps:

And all Francs, so he must have done the complex Fr/€ calculation.

Only two stamps (those with paintings) are valid on this cover from France
The stamps from SPM and Council of Europe are not valid.

Vayolene, that cover raised questions. Actually, at this time the two SPM stamps on cover appear to be the only two legitimate Euro currency stamps on the cover. Otherwise why would the stamps from S.P.M. and ECU not be valid?
In the past I have previously received mail from S.P.M. with France stamps. If they pay the postage in the La Poste mail system, what is the difference?

But I am a bit surprised that any older stamp from France or S.P.M denominated in French Franks only is legal to pay any postage due in 2023. The Euro became legitimate currency of France I believe in 1999 and according to XECurrency converter webpage the FF was pegged at 6.559 = 1€ and the French Franc became obsolete as of February 17, 2002.

SPM stamps are valid only on mail sent from SPM and not from Metropolitan France.
Council of Europe stamps are valid only on mail sent from the headquarters of the Council in Strasbourg. They're official stamps.

But of course they can be found on covers even when they're not legitimate. Most of French postmen don't know the rules...or don't care, and I assume machines can't identify those stamps.

On the other hand French stamps denominated in francs are still valid if the conversion rates are respected. Most of stamps from Belgium denominated in Belgian francs and stamps from Italy denominated in lire are still valid too with the same rules.
