Li-2 Soviet licensed built DC-3

The Lisunov Li-2, originally designated PS-84, was a license-built version of the Douglas DC-3. It was produced by Factory #84 in Moscow-Khimki and, after evacuation in 1941, at TAPO in Tashkent...

I flew in a DC-3 in 1965 from Dallas to Austin, Tx. Later, in Iran I flew several times in a DC-3 from Tabriz to Tehran and back. They called those planes da-KO-tas. Left over from WWII. I don't know if Iran ever put out a stamp with a Dakota on it. Anybody know?

The military version of the DC-3 is the C-47. the Gooney Bird". There were thousands of them by the end of WWII. The US sold or gave them away to many countries around the world. I remember them well while at RAF Lakenheath in England. When not in the RAPCON or Tower, I was in the office at Base Ops right on the flight line where they resided.

On September 9, 1999 Ireland issued a set of four "airplanes" stamps. The low value 30p stamp (Sc. #1201) shows an Aer Lingus DC-3 in flight.

From Wikipedia. "Aer Lingus, an anglicization of the Irish aerloingeas (meaning air fleet), is the flag carrier airline of Ireland and the second largest airline after Ryanair."

My first flight ever was in 1961 from Denver, CO to Santa Fe, NM on a Frontier Airlines DC3. I recall there were 20 or so passengers aboard. I was thirteen. My second took place in 1969 on an Air America C47 from Yakota AFB Base in Tokyo to Chitose, Japan. Subsequently flew on other Air America planes in SE Asia, mostly cargo but with a few passengers, but none were C47's. I think they were pretty much phased out by 1970, or so, even on Air America, which didn't always have the best stuff. But the C47's were great airplanes and lots are still flying today in different places around the world. This thread reminded me of these things. Thanks for the memories!

Here is the low value 21 toea stamp (SG #696, Sc #814) from Papua and New Guinea's October 27, 1993 set of four stamps commemorating the 20th anniversary of Air Niugini. A Douglas DC-3 is shown on the stamp.

"Air Niugini" is in the Tok Pisin language. From wikipedia, "Tok Pisin, or 'New Guinea Pidgin' is a creole language spoken throughout Papua New Guinea. It is an official language of Papua New Guinea and the most widely used language in the country."

Boroko, on the cancel, is a suburb of Port Moresby, the capital of the country.

angore,

Did you read the start of the thread? At that point, its place in US Modern was appropriate. In time, people started showing DC-3 on stamps from other countries. At this point, it is almost like a specialized "topical" thread, e.g., not just "planes on stamps" but a specific kind of plane on stamps. Had it started that way, and was in the US Modern forum, a note to the staff would likely get it moved to a more appropriate forum. But at this point, it seems like "it is what it is" and I see no need to move it (says someone who drops notes to the staff about moving threads all the time).
