US #298

Sault Ste. Marie Locks - looks a lot different today. Read that Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan

This has been a good month for my cancel collection.

My favorite stamp in the group is the center stamp, it is a patent cancel. The smallscratchs in the cancel actually cut the stamp to prevent reuse.

This is a scan of the back of the patent highlighting the patent cuts.

Attractive group Vinman.

Only one stamp left to complete the 1938 Gibraltar set and luckily it's a common lower value. This beauty arrived yesterday.

Nice stamp there, Stalizer, especially with the selvage. Do you have all the perf varieties for this set?

Picked this up late last week. One of those auctions with fairly low starting point and nobody else went in.
US Sc. 352 of 1909 perf 12 and a double line watermark.

I like having examples of different aspects of the production process -- this is of course a 'paste-up' pair. Hand-work that would soon be made redundant by the rotary press.
I like how the stamps are clearly cut with different margins while the pasting job is quite solid and workmanlike, if just a little off plumb.

loverarestamps, those are nice examplars.

Seeing the plate number on your 270 reminds me that at that point, during the production runs of the 270, the Bureau changed plate numbers from a serif font to sans serif. It would seem to have been with the fifth imprint of the 270 although this alteration goes unmentioned in Durland. It shows quite clearly when one looks on Hipstamp, for example at MNH 270's where there are now a number of examples with plate numbers attached. #128 to 253 are serif, later numbers (which would be 351-392) sans serif.

Not sure there is anything deep to this; I did not find discussion elsewhere in SCF. I gather there is an article by Cleland on First Bureau plates in the US Specialist 1995. I think I will have to join.
