Happy Birthday to Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872), an American portrait painter who in his middle age contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs, was a co-developer of the Morse code, and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Samuel Morse and a depiction of a printing electrical telegraph receiver, with transmitter key, designed and engraved by Jean Pheulpin, and issued by Monaco on May 17, 1965 to commemorate the centenary of the International Telecommunication Union, Scott No. 611, plus a photo of a similar telegraph device. - nethryk  |

Nice set of 4 Polish inventors from 2011 Jan Jozef Baranowski - 1805-1888 Amongst other things designed an accounting machine, a gas meter & a portable copy machine  Jan Szczepanik - 1872-1926 Held over 100 patents & made over 50 discoveries many still used in the motion picture industry, photography & television.  Michal Sedziwoj - 1566-1636 Discovered that air is not a single substance & includes a life-giving substance - oxygen.  Rudolf Stefan Weigl - 1883-1957 Inventor of the first effective vaccine against typhus  |

100th year of Discovering the Electromagnetism - 1870

Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Orsted (1777-1851) discovered that electric current in a wire can deflect a magnetized compass needle, a phenomenon the importance of which was rapidly recognized and which inspired the development of electromagnetic theory. |

Johann Georg Bodmer (1786-1864) was a prolific Swiss inventor who made contributions to areas ranging from weaponry to steam engines, textile manufacture (machinery for wool spinning), and railroad construction. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Bodmer, designed and engraved by Karl Bickel (1886-1982), and issued by Switzerland on June 1, 1964 to commemorate the centenary of the inventor's death, Scott No. B334, plus an image of an engraved portrait of J. Georg Bodmer, c. 1850's, by English engraver Samuel Bellin (1799-1893) which may have been the model for this stamp's design. - nethryk  |

 Chester Carlson is best known for having invented the process of electrophotography, which produced a dry copy rather than a wet copy, as was produced by the mimeograph process. Carlson's process was subsequently renamed xerography, a term that literally means "dry writing." -IBFS |

Ottmar Mergenthaler (1854-1899) was a German-born American inventor who invented the Linotype machine, the first device that could easily and quickly set complete lines of type for use in printing presses, thereby revolutionizing the art of printing. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Mergenthaler and also depicting a Linotype machine, designed by German artist Hermann Zapf (1918- ), engraved by Gerhard Schulz, and issued by Germany (West Berlin) on May 11, 1954 to commemorate the inventor's birth centenary, Scott No. 9N105, Michel No. 117, plus a photograph of Ottmar Mergenthaler which was probably a model for this stamp's design. - nethryk  |

Sequoyah was a Cherokee silversmith inventor of Cherokee alphabet. In 1821 he completed his independent creation of a Cherokee syllabary, making reading and writing in Cherokee possible. |

Leo Henricus Arthur Baekeland (1863-1944)

Leo Henricus Arthur Baekeland was a Belgian-born American chemist. He invented Velox photographic paper in 1893 and Bakelite in 1907. His invention of Bakelite, an inexpensive, nonflammable and popular plastic, marked the beginning of the modern plastics industry. |
