A few years ago I bought a 3rd issue revenue with a lovely Brady's Bend Iron Co. cancel, what I thought at the time was just a beautiful well-struck handstamp cancel. About a year after that I found the same cancel on a different denomination, so since then I've been on the lookout for them on other stamps. They are just aesthetically gorgeous, as they are almost universally found centered perfectly on the portrait, with a manuscript date in the center.
Fast forward to CHICAGOPEX last month, where I acquired the page from Mike Morrissey's exhibit that had that same cancel on a variety of 2nd- and 3rd-issue revenues. What was surprising to me, but the exhibit page bears it out, was that these are printed rather than handstamp cancels.
While I winced at the cost of the page, as a cancel specialist how could I possibly pass it by? Especially as one of the prior examples I had acquired was a denomination not included in Mike's exhibit (R146, $2.50 claret & black). The question then becomes just how many different stamps was the cancel used on? Is there such a thing as a complete set?
If anyone has any examples of the cancel, I'm interested in acquiring examples of the cancel on any revenues I don't already have. I don't have the stamps in front of me at the moment, but I'll reply to this post with a list of the types/denominations I already have.
