Canada Post has gone from being profitable to unprofitable in the last few years by buying new equipment and going into debt because of this. There's an old wise saying that goes "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." Here are some interesting articles that covers what has happened.

I don't see where (a) buying modern equipment is at the root of the problem; (b)that the pension liability and political stupidity are not. Canada Post is supposed to be - by Parliamentary decision - at arm's length from government. But there is little in the public domain in Canada that is even at finger's length from Harper.

We have our own share of problems in the United States (USPS). In the end it will all work out in some maner of form.
