For the UN Year of Pulses, the Maldives issued a sheet showing how seeds are sorted in that part of the world. A small seedling is superimposed to show that some seeds are saved for the next planting season.

Another tree planting campaign, this one in Bangladesh. The country desperately needs more trees to reduce flooding and protect the coast and is investing in millions of trees per year. Whole families go out to plant. 2003

Water and grain crops - not easy to combine in the sandy country of Qatar. The tower in the center is the old water tower, the new ones are quite amazing, looking like colorful wine glasses in the city.

It's already another Beethoven year! This one 250 years after his birth. Can you imagine writing all those notes, etc. with a quill pen! His birthday isn't till December, but there may be many new stamps issued for the celebration.

The UN frequently calls upon youngsters to design a stamp for a particular topic. For "My Vision of Peace" Anggun Sita Rustinya drew a smiling Earth supported by the hands of all nations and protected by the "hands" of a Peace Dove. Beautiful! Geneva 2004

Albrecht Dürer's paintings of hands catch the eye of the beholder. He perfected his paintings by doing sketches before completing the major work. The painting shows the 12-year-old Jesus among the Learned Men. Togo, 450 years after the death of the artist in 1528, 1978.
