An International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, 1990-200, was launched by the UN. The Decade was intended to reduce, through concerted international action, especially in developing countries, loss of life, poverty damage and social and economic disruption caused by natural disasters.
In 2013 vast areas of Germany were flooded along the Elbe river and its tributaries. The charity stamp has already appeared on an earlier page. These are special cancels which make the use of the stamp even more attractive.
During the catastrophic flood of 1962 in the low-lands of northwestern Germany, which cost more than 300 lives, the army was called in to help with helicopters. This was also the case during the flood of 2013. Commemorative cover and cancellations (in the background of the newer one is the Cathedral of Magdeburg). Both floods involved the Elbe river.

Indonesia Natural Disasters Relief Fund April 15, 1954 The design portrays the eruption of Mt Merapi in central Java on January 18, 1954, which killed more than 60 people. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548.
