This September 29, 1993 $19 stamp (Sc #2923) of Republic of China (Taiwan) was issued as a part of its "Lucky (Mythical) Animals" series. Stamp depicts "The Black Tortoise', and the photograph shows a Southern Dynasties brick relief of it.

From wikipedia, "The Black Tortoise or Black Turtle, known in Chinese as 'Xuanwu', is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. Despite its English name, It is usually depicted as a turtle entwined together with a snake...It represents the north and the winter season."

Here is the 1.50 piastres value (Sc #29 from South Viet Nam's July 20, 1955 three-stamp set commemorating the sixth anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Stamp shows a talismanic turtle somewhat like the one shown in the last posting.

From itourvn.com, "In four mythical creatures in Vietnamese cultures, the turtle is the only real animal. As a long-lived amphibian reptile, the turtle has the ability to survive without food for a long time. Thus, they represent longevity and spiritual strength...Turtle (Quy) also symbolize immortal intelligence."
