He was regarded as the official national poet of modern Italy. Some of his poetry collections include Juvenilia (1850-1860), Rime Nuove (1861-1886) and Odi Barbare (1873-1889). Carducci also contributed to literary criticism during his professorship in Bologna.  |

Today is International Tuberculosis Day. The stamp honors Robert Koch who received the prize for physiology in 1905 for his work in bacteriology. TB is still a major contagious disease which kills many people each year. The bacteria appear as little sticks in the light microscope. Koch kept guinea pigs for his experiments.  |
