Giosuč Carducci (1835 – 1907) was an Italian poet, writer, literary critic and teacher. He was regarded as the official national poet of modern Italy. Some of his poetry collections include Juvenilia (1850-1860), Rime Nuove (1861-1886) and Odi Barbare (1873-1889). Carducci also contributed to literary criticism during his professorship in Bologna.

André Gide (1869 – 1951) was a French author. Gide's career ranged from the symbolist movement to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars. His makor works include Marshlands (1895), The Immoralist (1902), The Counterfeiters (1927), and Theseus (1946).
