I am posting this in the "Precancel" section, because it kinda fits here.

Story behind this:

I found this in a pile of material I received from a dealer many, many years ago.

The stamp is overprinted "MONTGOMERY/ALA./ARMISTICE/NOV.11.1918"
I sent off a scan to (then) Western Stamp Collector", with no replies.
Many years later, I sent a scan to Linn's, with no replies.
I contacted the Montgomery Stamp Collectors group and they were not sure, but thought it may have been the work of somebody or other (don't remember if a name was ever given).

There may be 99 more of these, if the collector did one sheet. The printing looks like a local precancel handstamp (minus the lines).

One way or another this seems to be a rare item, as I have never seen or heard of one other than this.

I present the stamp in question:

As you can see the item was postally used with a wave cancel after the stamp was applied to an envelope, so that sort of rules out "Precancel" usage.

I guess this was a commemoration, done by an unknown collector, back in time.

Any of you have any adds to this? Hope you find it interesting.

Well certainly the stamp was not issued in 1918. Perhaps it is an anniversary of the armistice.

Note both stamps have light cancels - probably UNDER the overprint. Usually when fakers are too cheap to use mint stamps for their productions, it is a sign that it is a fakeroo. Still cute and collectable.

It was explained in another thread. Hit F5 to refresh your browser and all should be well.
