Can anyone help ID the City and State name shown on this precancel?

Maybe "(?) Michael" -- "Saint Michael", perhaps?

Thanks. That does seem the most reasonable answer, I suppose.

I just looked up Saint Michael, North Dakota and found that it has a whopping population of only 27 (?!), yet still has an operating post office that's been in place since 1932. Interestingly, the USPS website will not recite any hours of operation but rather suggests that it "varies".

Seems to be a rather obscure place to have need for a precanceled stamp.

Wonder what criteria had to met for a precancel from such a small post office with so few people? I'm rather new to the whole precancel area and have lots to research.

That post office sent out tons of junk mail using 1/2 cent stamps - I don't know the user but I am sure they mailed nationwide.

The left example is Jelm, Wyoming. (Actually, the right example could be Jelm as well, although the imprint appears to have jumped a bit.)

According to Jim Forte's Postal History website the post office is now discontinued, but was in operation from 1898-1965.

Awesome, thank you. Never heard of Jelm, had to look it up. Since most precancels I have seen have the city more centered over the state, I thought a letter or two was missing in the front part of the city. You guys are great.

What is the best reference for Wyoming precancels? To what does "style 745" refer? I only have the Scott Specialized catalog, and the info. on precancels is very limited. Thank you.

Bruce Brunell, the author, is a nice guy - you can find him online at the precancel.com site.

My Alsbama catalog is free-downloadable from the same webpage. I modeled mine from Bruce's Wyoming so you can see how precancel catalogs are formatted and what the styles look like. Mike Hynes, the PSS webmaster, sells literature and probably has the WY available.
