Javier Pereira

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the Colombian supercentenarian.

Javier Pereira (allegedly born 1789, date of death unknown but most commonly given as March 30, 1958) was reputedly over 160 years old at the time of his death. He was a Zenú Indian who lived in Colombia. Although his death is variously said to have been in 1955, 1956, and 1958, sources all claim that he was born in 1789.

He was said to have had five wives and to be seeking another when he was "discovered" in 1954; allegedly his last remaining grandchild had died in 1941 at the age of 85. Interviewed by historians, he was able to supply information about well-known historical events such as the Battle of Cartagena, fought in 1815, as well as about Indian conflicts and a terrible famine that had taken place years before. Asked about the secret of his longevity, Pereira said that one must chew cocoa beans, drink plenty of coffee, smoke a big cigar now and then, and not worry. Pereira was flown to New York City to be checked by teams of modern doctors. He was four feet four inches tall and weighed seventy-five pounds. He had no teeth but his hair was still brown. He had the blood pressure and arterial health of a young man, could easily stand on one leg and pirouette, and walk several blocks and up a couple of flights of stairs without losing his breath. One doctor said he had the appearance of a man "more than 150 years old," which raises the interesting question of how the doctor would know that even if Pereira were actually as old as claimed.

The most specific death date reported is 30 March 1958 in his home town of Montería. His obituary was reported in Time for 14 April 1958 on page 88. Colombia issued a postage stamp commemorating Pereira.

The celebrated architect I.M. Pei (1917-2019) made it to 102! He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983.

Here is a building of his, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, on a 2005 stamp US Scott#3910g

France had shown his pyramid at the Louvre at the center of a nice 1993 se-tenant pair Scott #2396-97. The pyramid is actually on both stamps.

Finally here is the man himself on a 1999 issue from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Ernst Jünger (March 1895-February 1998) was a German novelist and essayist. His writing expressed his conservative viewpoints, but he is also known for his studies of insects; there is even a prize in his name awarded to entomologists for special accomplishments.

That is quite rude Greaden. Why assume, there are quite a few 20s, 30s, 40s in this forum. Why assume that stamp clubs have people over 110?

I apologize. I am not young, but feel comparatively young at stamp clubs where the other members come in with walkers. I am honored to learn from much more experienced collectors. I mourn those who stop attending. I use admittedly tasteless humor to cope with tragedy.

Probably every stamp collector knows of a few designs created by the Swiss multi-talent Hans Erni (February 1909 - March 2015). He did stamps for several countries as well as for the UN and illustrated many books. It's high time he gets a stamp in his honor!

(Comment: Indeed, maybe stamp collecting keeps the mind active even when other parts are a bit tired?)
