Berlin issued this stamp on August 11, 1988 to publicize the annual meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Congress held in Berlin. The global depiction appears to be a slight variation of the Werner Projection developed by Johannes Stabius round 1500. Antarctica is not shown. From Wikipedia, "Parallels are equally spaced concentric circle arcs. Distances from the North Pole are correct as are the curved distances along parallels and distances along central meridians." |

The USA's Byrd Antarctic issue (Sc #733) of October 9, 1933 commemorates the admiral's 2nd Antarctic expedition. The stamp's globe presents some wildly inaccurate distortions of continents and oceans in order to show the routes of Byrd's various expeditions. |

This stamp (Sc #370) of Sao Tome and Principe was issued on July 15, 1958 to publicize Portugal and its colonial empire's participation in the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium. The globe indicating the colonies is interesting. There is no need for a second view of the world, because the colonies in the new world were long gone at this point in time. The colonies in Africa and India would be lost in a few short years, and the last Portuguese colony, Macau, would be handed over to China in 1999. |
