This September 22, 1983 issue of Japan (Scott #1535) shows Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni). It is from the country's 1983-4 series of 10 stamps of Endangered Birds.

The owl is identified as Ketupa blakistoni on the stamp, but since the time of issue it has been reclassified/renamed as Bubo blakistoni from DNA examination.

According to Wikipedia, "Blakiston's fish owl is the largest living species of owl...in the three major categories: weight, length, and wingspan."

A boreal owl is the subject of the 6.40 kr. value (Facit #1104) of Norway's 1988-91 "Nature" definitive series of nine stamps. Stamp is recess (steel engraving) and offset printed, and was issued on February 21, 1991.

From Wikipedia, "The boreal owl (Aegolius funereus) is a small owl. In Europe, it is typically known as Tengmalm's owl after Swedish naturalist Peter Tengmalm...The genus name Aegolius is a type of screech owl thought to be a bird of ill omen, and funereus means funereal."
