This 55c domestic rate stamp (Mi. #2880) of Germany was issued on July 7, 2011 and commemorates the 500th anniversary of the appearance of fictional character Till Eulenspiege, who is depicted with an owl perched on his left hand.

From Wikipedia, "Till Eulenspiegel is the protagonist of a German chapbook published in 1515 with a possible background in earlier Middle Low German folklore. (His) picaresque career takes him to many places throughout the Holy Roman Empire."

A chapbook is a pamphlet containing tales, ballads, or tracts, sold by peddlers.
