Queanbeyan Aboriginal word for "Clear Waters" Postmark collector's mantra "Postmarks can make fools of us all" Linus the last letter of your Queanbeyan, you would swear that would not be a "Y" |

Thank you, yes it does not look like a "Y" but you nailed it. Quote: Postmark collector's mantra "Postmarks can make fools of us all" I have proof this statement is true, scanned below, from my collection: Postmark says "SYDNEY JAIL" Fool's gold! Linus |

I didn't figure the inmates had their own post office.
Thanks for completing the circle with the rest of the story.

I discovered a barred-number cancel in my Australia horde today. I don't know which way to read it, so I scanned it twice. Where was this stamp cancelled? Any ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance, Linus |

Nice find Linus. Confirmed in 1983 "Australian Numeral Cancellations: A compendium" H.M.Campbell, RDP., F.R.P.S.L. Many common 1d stamps have cancels that sell for $100s. Victoria issued 2100 numeral postmarkers, between #1 (Melbourne) and #2100 (King Valley - issued November 1906). Of these 2100 numbers - despite an army of collectors scouring the earth over several generations - some 51 numbers have NEVER been sighted. Postmark Sales of 2100 $150 and $354 |

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge of Australian stamps with me.
Nice stamps, and cancels, Bobby.
How ironic, that the first barred numeral postmark I discover in my own collection is the last number, 2100.
Rod, this thread is getting me "fired up" to finally research all those Aussie stamps I have accumulated over many years. I have a lot to learn. but man, this hobby is fun!

Today I discovered this nice Victoria 712 barred numeral postmark from Nagambie, Victoria in my big box of Australia mixture I recently bought at the Stamp Out Cancer Auction in Rock Island, Illinois. Linus |
